Billy Tomblin is entering his 3rd season as head baseball coach for the Comets and his second as assistant athletic director for Comet Athletics.
Tomblin was previously Mayville State's assistant baseball coach for 9 years. He also played 2 seasons under head coach, Scott Berry, where his team would win back to back DAC Championships and he would get All-Conference honors behind the plate.
2024-25 Season: The Comets finish 5th overall in their last season in the NSAA. Tomblin had four all-conference recipients. Chris Shopbell & Carson Lundmark were named First Team, Garret Lundmark was named Second Team and Jack McQueen was named Honorable Mention. Shopbell was also 5th in the conference overall with a .379 batting average. The team was 7th overall in hitting statistics.
2023-24 Season: The Comets finished 7th overall in the NSAA. Tomblin had 3 all-conference recipients. Chris Shopbell & Riley Rankin were both named First Team, Carson Lundmark & Gunner Thompson were both named Honorable Mention. Senior, Marcus Hughes, was 5th in stolen bases in the conference with 19. The team was 4th in the conference in fielding % with .951. Tomblin also had 9 Daktronic NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athletes.
Since joining the staff in the spring of 2013, Tomblin has worked to make an impact in the program in numerous ways. Previous to Spring of 2013, Tomblin was a Graduate Assistant with the Mayville State University football program, working as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator since the fall of 2012. He continued in those roles, doubling up coaching both sports until 2017, when he made the move to being a full time baseball coach.
Tomblin has been active in the summers. He was the former head coach of the Badlands Big Sticks (Dickinson, ND) of the Northwoods League. In his first year at the helm, Tomblin led the team to a Lewis Division Championship. He was with the Big Sticks for 2 seasons. Previous to the Big Sticks, in the summer of 2016, Tomblin got his first head coaching gig and was named the head coach of the Titustown Titans of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate League, a college summer league out of Norfolk, Virginia. The Titans had a rollercoaster type summer, struggling to find their groove until they went on a run in the playoffs and won the league championship.
An active member in the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association), speaking at the South Dakota State Barnstormers Clinic in August of 2017. In 2023 he was named the ABCA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
Tomblin is a Fremont, California native and attended Irvington High School. After high school Tomblin attended Ohlone Junior College and Chabot Junior College before being recruited by Scott Berry and playing on two consecutive DAC Championship teams and receiving All-Conference honors behind the plate.
Tomblin completed his B.S. degree in Fitness and Wellness with a minor in Coaching from Mayville State University in 2012 and was named HPER Major of the Year. He then completed his M.S. degree in Leadership in Physical Education and Sport at North Dakota State University in 2014.
Tomblin resides in Mayville with his wife Ashley and their two boys, Billy and Cayson.
