Derek Schlieve
Head Coach

Derek Schlieve is going into his fourth season as the head coach of the Mayville State University Football program after being elevated to that position on April 14, 2011.

In his first year as head coach at Mayville State University, Coach Schlieve guided the Comets to 5 wins. Those 5 wins were more wins than the previous 3 years combined. The 5 wins are also the highest win total in over 20 years. Coach Schlieve then followed that success up with a second year that saw the Comets match the initial success of year one with another 5 win campaign. Year three not only matched that win total, but saw even more growth as the Comets were able to win 7 games. This gave Mayville State University its’ first winning season for Football in over 23 years. The 7 wins also put the Comet Football program over .500 (17-16) for the tenure of Coach Schlieve. The 17 wins over the first 3 years is a good sign for things to come, especially when you consider that the previous decade had a record of 13 – 87.

The inaugural campaign saw the Comets beat perennial powerhouse Dickinson State for the first time since 1990. The program also played their first junior varsity game in over a decade. The next season saw the Comets bring home 5 more wins to bring the two year total to 10 games, the highest win total for that span of time in 21 years. Year 3 saw the Comets beat rival Valley City State who came into the game ranked # 16 in the nation for their homecoming game. That win brought the staffs overall record up to 5 – 1 in Farmers Bowls and Homecoming games. The 17 wins as a head coach at Mayville State University moves Coach Schlieve into 2nd place all time for wins at Mayville State University behind only the late Jerome Berg. The program seems to gain momentum with each season.

The success has not been limited to the field though as the Comets have been well represented during post season voting each of the last 3 years. In 2011 there were 5 players who earned first team all-conference honors and 4 more who received honorable mention all-conference honors. At that point, these were all-time records for Mayville State University Football. The 2012 campaign saw the Comet Football Program beat these all-time records with 6 players getting first team all-conference honors and 5 more players earning honorable mention all-conference honors. The 2013 Comets tied these all-time all-conference records with another 6 players who earned first team all-conference and 5 more players who were selected as honorable all-conference performers.

The reason that student-athletes attend college is to get a degree and the coaching staff at Mayville State University is well aware of this and makes sure that players are taking care of business in the classroom as well. In 2011 there were 7 players who earned academic all-conference accolades and 4 players who earned academic-All Americans honors. These were all-time records at that point. The 2012 season saw those all-time records fall as well with 13 players getting academic all-conference honors and 5 players earning academic All-American honors. The 2013 season saw 8 players get academic all-conference and 4 earn academic All-American honors. This is a solid representation and proof of the focus that the staff places on academics.

Prior to being named the head coach at Mayville State, Schlieve was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Mayville State for 3 seasons.

He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Wahpeton Public Schools (ND). After one year at Wahpeton he was named defensive coordinator at Pillager Public Schools (MN). Following a one-year stint as defensive coordinator at Pillager, he was named the head coach and remained there for three seasons. In September of 2005 Schlieve was named the State of Minnesota football coach of the week. After being a head high school coach for three seasons he returned to Mayville State to coach the defensive line in the spring of 2007. After completing his masters' degree, Schlieve left for one year and was the offensive coordinator at Beulah Public Schools (ND).

Schlieve earned his bachelors’ degree at Mayville State University with a major in elementary education and a minor in coaching. Schlieve graduated magna cum laude in 2002. He earned his graduate degree in sports management from St. Cloud State University in 2007, also graduating with magna cum laude honors.

A four-year letter winner in college, Schlieve was twice named Academic All Conference (DAC-10) and once named Academic All American (NAIA). He also played in the National All Star Bowl at the linebacker position in Minneapolis, Minnesota after his senior season.

Coach Schlieve resides in Mayville with Sarah and sons Camdyn & Xavier.
