This will be Coach Thompson’s first year at Mayville State University and he will assume the role of defensive backs coach. Thompson joined the staff following two seasons as the head coach and defensive coordinator for European teams in both France and the Czech Republic, winning the Czech Championship this last season with a 12-1-1 record. During that same time Thompson spent the European off-season as the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach for Westview High School in Portland, OR, where in 2015 his receivers were #1 and #2 in the state in receptions.
Previously, Coach Thompson served two seasons with Lewis & Clark College as the receivers coach, coaching wide receiver Andrew Frisina to NW All-Conference Honors and the school’s single-season reception record. That same season Coach Thompson was selected to coach running backs in the 88th annual East-West Shrine game featuring some of the best college football players in the country.
In 2011, Thompson coached in the professional ranks for the Omaha Nighthawks in the United Football League (UFL). Thompson served as tight ends coach and assistant special teams for the Nighthawks. The Nighthawks led the league in passing yards per game as well as blocked kicks.
Thompson spent the previous year at Albright College where he was the wide receivers coach and director of football operations for the Lions. While at Albright, Thompson coached wide receiver Luke Wallace to All-Conference honors and helped groom Scott Pillar, who went on to become an All-American receiver at Albright College.
From 2008-2010, Thompson coached the running backs at Portland State University for two seasons. Thompson assisted in an offensive unit that led the country in passing yards per game during the 2008 season. As the Vikings running backs coach, Thompson helped develop running back Bobby McLintock into a 2009 First-Team All-Big Sky Conference player. During his years at Portland State, Thompson worked under legendary coaches Jerry Glanville and Mouse Davis.
Prior to his time at Portland State, Thompson spent one season as a graduate assistant at Northern State University where he worked with the running backs. Thompson also served as the summer camp coordinator as well as aiding in the team’s strength and conditioning program.
In 2004, Thompson began his first stint as an assistant at Lewis & Clark College where he coached defensive backs (2004), running backs (2005) and directed a kick return unit that led the NWC in average yards per return for two consecutive seasons.
Thompson brings 16 years of coaching experience to Mayville. A native of Portland, OR., Thompson played full-back at both Portland State and Southern Oregon where he was part of a 2001 team recently inducted into the hall of fame. Thompson graduated with a BS in Health Education from Portland State University and earned a Master’s of Science in Education from Northern State University.
