During the 2013 season, his first year as an assistant coach, the Comet defense ended the year ranking in multiple categories. The Comets ranked 1^st in pass defense efficiency, 4^th in pass defense, 7^th in total defense, and 11^th in scoring defense.

McGill is a Tyndall, South Dakota native and attended Bon Homme High School.  After high school McGill attended Northwestern College to play football for two seasons. McGill then transferred to the University of South Dakota. While at the University of South Dakota, he coached football for two seasons at Bon Homme High School.

McGill completed his B.S. in Physical Education with a minor in Coaching from the University of South Dakota. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Leadership in Physical Education and Sport at North Dakota State University.
