Alex Herman is entering his third year as Associate Head Coach and sixth year overall as a coach in the Men’s Basketball program. His duties consist of opponent scouting reports, recruiting, post player skill development, and academic progress.
After the 2019 season, Herman was named to the 2019 Under Armour 30-Under-30, representing the 30 most outstanding men’s basketball coaches under the age of 30.
As a coach, he has been a part of the 3-Peat NSAA Conference Tournament Champions and 3-time NAIA Division II National Tournament Appearance. Herman has coached two NAIA All-Americans in Gorg Alhag in 2018-19 and Max Cooper in 2019-20. Alhag, and Cooper were also named to NSAA First-Team All-Conference as well in their respected season. Alhag averaged 13.7 points, shot 44.9 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from behind the arc, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.6 rebounds. Cooper averaged 15.0 points, shot 61.8 percent from the field, 7.64 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game.
He has also coached two NSAA Second-Team All-Conference and three NSAA Honorable Mention. Dan Lindgren in 2018-19 and Jalen Valverde in 2019-20 were named to NSAA Second-Team All-Conference. Gorg Alhag in 2017-18, Dan Lindgren 2017-18, and Latrelle Franklin 2019-20 were named to NSAA Honorable Mention.
Before he coached, he played basketball for two years at Lake Region State College from 2011-13 and graduated with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. After his two years at Lake Region, he transferred to Mayville State to finish his two years of eligibility. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Coaching.
Herman completed his Master’s Degree in 2018 from NDSU in Leadership in Physical Education & Sport. He also serves as an instructor on campus for the HPER (Health Physical Education Recreation) Department.
He resides in Mayville with his wife Remington.
