Biography

As a Comet:
2024: Started in all 20 games that she played. She primarily played center field, producing 35 put-outs, and 4 assists for the season. Offensively, she had 54 at-bats, posting a .241 batting average, .359 on-base percentage and a .352 slugging percentage, racking up 13 hits, with 4 doubles, and 1 triple. She scored 10 times, stole 7 bases, and had 6 RBIs. Her season-high was against Viterbo, where she had 1 double with a total of 2 hits, and 2 RBIs. Hughes was also recognized as a 2024 Daktronics Scholar-Athlete.
 
2023: Started in all 30 games played as an outfielder, producing 69 put-outs, and 3 assists for the season. Offensively, she had 97 at-bats, posting a .278 batting average, .369 on-base percentage and .505 slugging percentage, racking up 27 hits, with 4 doubles, 3 triples, and 4 home runs. She scored 22 times and had 15 RBIs. Her season-high was against Viterbo, where she hit 2 home runs, with a total of 3 hits on the day, and scored 3 times. Hughes was also recognized as a 2023 Daktronics Scholar-Athlete.
 
2022: Started in 30 of 31 games played. She produced 32 put-outs, and 4 assists for the season. Offensively, she had 98 at-bats, posting a .367 batting average, .386 on-base percentage and .673 slugging percentage, racking up 36 hits, with 6 doubles, 3 triples, and 6 home runs. She scored 29 times and had 20 RBIs. Her season high was against Dickinson State, where she hit 2 home runs, scored 4 times, and had 5 RBIs. Academically, Hughes made the Dean’s List.

Hughes has also been a four-year starter for Mayville State Women's Basketball.

Before MSU:
Hughes attended Thompson Public School in Thompson, ND. She was a 3-sport athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and softball. In basketball, Hughes earned All-Region honors in basketball for four years, All-State 2nd team for one year, and All-State 1st team for two years. She was the Region 2 Senior Athlete, North Dakota Senior Athlete of the Year, a Miss Basketball finalist, and played in the Lions All-Star Game. In volleyball, she received All-Region honors for three years, All-State honors for one year, and was the Region 2 Senior Athlete of the Year. In softball, she was All-Region for four years, All-State for two years, and the East Region Senior Athlete of the Year, and also participated in the All-Star Game. Overall, she was named North Dakota Female Athlete of the Year. Academically, Mackenzie made the A Honor Roll.
She is the daughter of Jeremy and Beth Hughes, and has a sibling named Marcus.
