Biography
As a Comet:
2023-24: Started in 25 of 29 games averaging 25.8 minutes per game. She averaged 10 points per game, had a career high of 76 steals on the season, 133 steals and 68 assists. Scored a season high of 19 points against Dakota State and Viterbo. Recorded a career high of 8 steals against Dakota State. Mertens was named Second Team All-Conference and to the NSAA All-Defense team.
2022-23: Started in all 30 games averaging 26.3 minutes per game. She averaged 10.2 points per game, racked up 66 steals, 7 blocks, 66 assists and 153 rebounds. Scored a season high of 19 points against Doane University. On three separate occasions, she made 5 three pointers. Against Dickinson State, she had a season high of 6 steals. Mertens was named All-Conference Honorable Mention and to the NSAA All-Defense team.
Prior to Mayville State University, Mertens played at the University of Minnesota Crookston. As a freshman she started in 15 of 16 games played and as a sophomore she started in 10 of 18.
Mertens is the daughter of Tom and Diane. She has five siblings: BJ, Steph, Nate, Jake and Brett. As a 2020 graduate of Devils Lake, Mertens was named the senior athlete of the year and comes from a basketball family. Her brother Nathan played at Minot State University and ranks fifth all-time in scoring for the Beavers. Her brother Jake is played for Minnesota State University Moorhead. Her brother B.J. played at the University of Jamestown and her sister Steph Mertens played basketball at Lake Region State College. She is currently majoring in Biology.
