Ashley Nelson

Ashley Nelson begins her seventh season as an assistant coach with the Mayville State University volleyball program.

Nelson is a Grand Forks, N.D. native and attended Red River High School, where she was a standout volleyball player. She came to Mayville following her senior year of high school where she was a four-year starter for the Comets. Nelson also earned All-Conference recognition.

In 2014, Nelson helped coach the Comets to 21 wins on the season, a third place finish during the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) regular conference season, and a second place finish in the NSAA tournament.

The 2014 season saw many Comet players earn conference and national honors. Josette Glatt was named the NSAA Most Valuable Athlete, Offensive Player-of-the-Year, and First Team All-Conference. Glatt also received the NSAA Champions of Character award. Katie Wangberg was selected as NSAA Setter-of-the-Year and named NSAA First Team All-Conference. Remington Werner earned Second Team All-Conference honors for the Comets. In addition to their NSAA conference accolades, Josette Glatt and Katie Wangberg earned First Team All-Region honors which was voted on by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The postseason awards continued to pile up for Josette Glatt as she was chosen by the NAIA Volleyball All-America Selection Committee as a Third Team All-American.

In 2012, Coach Nelson helped coach the Comets to 24 victories and an appearance in the semi-finals of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference tournament. In 2013 and 2014, the Comets recorded 21 wins each season and advanced to the championship match of the NSAA conference tournament.

Nelson earned her B.S. in Physical Education at Mayville State University along with minors in Health and Developmental Adaptive Physical Education. She earned her Master’s degree in Special Education from the University of North Dakota.Â
