The Mayville State University men's basketball team hosted the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University from the GPAC on Friday, December 17, 2010 at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. The men came up on a short end of the score with an 88-75 final score.
The most eye-popping statistic of this game would be the Tigers shooting 60% from the field for the game. Most of their baskets came outside jump-shots with hands in their face; tonight the whole team was feeling it.
Brady Wiebe had a quiet 25 points and 11 rebounds. He did a good job getting the ball in position to score easily for the Tigers and first year head coach Shane Murphy. Wiebe also made the most of his trips to the foul line going 13-for-17 in the game.
The Tigers (11-4) had a balanced offense in this game as well. After Wiebe's 25, four other Tiger players hit double figures in scoring. Larry Swann scored 19 points, German Madueno and Jake Kneeland each added 12 points, and Justin Nelson scored 10 points to round out the big scorers.
Mayville State (5-6) was led in scoring once again by
Shavontae Samuels who finished with a game-high 28 points. “Shavo” got to the basket at will and drove into the teeth of the Tigers defense well in the second half.
Wiley Jiles had a strong effort for the men with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jiles had a game-high five offensive rebounds which was great hustle on his part to keep possessions alive.
Sean Greene added 11 points off the bench for Mayville State.
The Tigers are a very fundamental team and took advantage of any opening they were given. It's going to be hard for anyone to win if your opponent is making those type of contested shots.
Mayville State University (5-6) (0-1) doesn't have much time to rest as they will be traveling to Orem, Utah to take on Utah Valley University in an exhibition game on Monday, December 20th, 2010. The guys aren't home again until January 14th and 15th when Black Hills State University and South Dakota Tech come to Mayville.
