Mayville State University opened their conference schedule against the Dakota State University Trojans on Friday, December 03, 2010 in Mayville, ND. The Comet men came up shot 77-68 in a hard fought contest.
Jordan King led the Trojans on offense finishing with 23 points and seven assists. King was dialed in from the second he walked in the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse as he went 8-for-12 from the floor including three of five from downtown. He paced the Trojan offense all night.
Santino Clay followed Kings' lead scoring 19 points for the Trojans. Clay was active on defense as well coming up with three blocked shots as well.
Mayville State University (4-4) (0-1) fell behind quickly as the Trojans scored the first eight points of the game to put the team on their heels right away. The men fought back hard throughout the half and cut the lead to six by halftime after
Wiley Jiles nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Comets some momentum at the break.
Mayville State was led offensively by
Shavontae Samuels 21 points. “Shavo” grabbed four steals and four rebounds tonight as well. After Shavo's 21 the Comets had 12 from
Christian Harris and 11 from
Sean Greene. Greene came up with five rebounds as well as two assists and a steal for the Comet men. Harris did a good job frustrating the Trojans with his defense and consistent effort and hustle.
Mayville State did edge out the Trojans on the glass with a 32-27 advantage in that category.
Ross Aman was a big part of that as he collected 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive side of the ball. Ross did a good job to give the Comets extra possessions.
Throughout the second half the men just couldn't quite close the gap on Dakota State. Each time we made a run they found a way to get a bucket. It was quite similar to the women's game with the roles reversed.
Dakota State (6-4)(1-0) played tough in a hostile environment on the road and earned their first conference victory of the season.
Mayville State won't be in action again until Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 as they take on the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits in an exhibition contest. Their game against Martin Luther College has been postponed due to weather restrictions. The make-up date has not been announced yet.
