Hailey Longtin and
Laura Taylor each scored 18 points for the Comet women on Friday, December 3rd, 2010 to lead the Comets to their second consecutive victory. The opponent was the Dakota State University Trojans, giving the Comets their first conference match-up of the season.
After Longtin and Taylor the Comets also got 12 points apiece from
Erin Ericson and Elixannette Cosme-Gonzalez. “Eli” had a nice all-around game grabbing six rebounds and dishing out eight assists to go with her point total. She also grabbed two steals in the game.
Kira DeMorales had another solid game on the glass grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. The Comets won the battle on the boards 36-31 over the Trojans, including 13 offensive rebounds to give the team extra possessions.
The Comets played a strong first half building a 38-24 lead going into the locker room with good passing and ball movement ending the half on a 15-0 run.
The Trojans didn't back down in the second half as they kept cutting into the lead to try and get back into the game. Each time the Trojans made a run it seemed like the Comet women found a way to get an easy basket in transition. The defense forced 19 Trojan turnovers, which the Comets took advantage of.
Kelli Smart did a good job managing the offense collecting five assists in the game, second on the team after Cosme-Gonzalez.
The difference in the game was at the free throw line where the Comets got early and often. They did a good job being aggressive with the ball and finding a way to get to the charity stripe. As a team they shot 21-of-31 compared to just 6-for-12 from Dakota State.
The Comets were able to hold off the Trojans second half push with smart offense, good defense, and clutch free throws in the final minutes.
This victory improved the Comet women to 2-5 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.
Next action was scheduled for Saturday, December 4th, 2010 in Mayville against Martin Luther College, but that has been postponed due to weather. The make-up date has not been announced as of yet. The next contest will be on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 as they take on the North Dakota State University Bison in an exhibition contest.
