The Mayville State University women's basketball team added to their impressive home record with a solid win over the Minnesota-Morris Cougars. The Comets had good performances all around with six players scoring in double figures as well as 30 points off the bench.
Megan Groen led the Comets with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Groen had two rebounds, assists, and steals in the game. Hailey Longtin followed with 16 points of her own. Longtin was 5-for-11 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.
Bench production helped the team tonight as Missy Kassube and Angela Tauer each scored 12 points for the second unit. Kassube and Tauer were also active on the glass with six and five rebounds, respectively. Sabrina Rude and Hannah Wenaas rounded out the bench production with three points each. Wenaas also pulled down six rebounds to tie Kassube for the team lead.
Erin Ericson scored 11 points and Ashley Holmstrom had 10 to round out the scoring for Mayville State.
Kay Laforet had another nice game running the offense. Laforet had seven assists while recording just one turnover. She did a great job finding her open teammates and creating open shots off drives to the rim.
The Cougars offense got going in the second half but the Comets offense was too much as they held off the late push to comfortably win the game 88-76.
Mayville State was +6 in the turnover margin as their defense forced a lot of errant passes and created steals for the Comet defenders. Erica Amann led the Comets stealing the ball four times in the game. Wenaas followed her with three steals.
Mayville State University (8-2) will be in action again on Friday, December 2, 2011 when they host Martin Luther College at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, ND. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
