Shavontae Samuels and Nate Lebsock went back-and-forth as the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks defeated the Comets on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, North Dakota.
Samuels finished with 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting with five rebounds and four assists. Lebsock was right with him with 26 points including a perfect 15-for-15 shooting at the free throw line. Lebsock was definitely dialed in at the free throw line.
Dickinson State got out to an early lead taking a 41-27 lead at the break. Mayville State struggled in the first half hitting just 10 of their 26 shot attempts. The second half was much better as the Comets cut the Blue Hawk lead to eight points in the latter stages of the half. The Blue Hawks were too solid at the free throw line for the men to make the comeback complete. As a team they shot 32-of-40 at the charity stripe.
The Blue Hawks got a big contribution from their bench as the subs combined for 27 points. Derek Pauley led the second unit with 12 points. Rounding out the scoring for Dickinson State was John Hanstad and Tevin Hurd each scoring 10 points.
The rebounding edge was slightly in Dickinson State's favor as they pulled down 32 compared to the Comets 30. John Hansted led the Blue Hawks with eight rebounds.
Cody Coauette and
Wiley Jiles each pulled down six to lead Mayville State.
Ross Aman didn't get to play as much as he would've liked, but made his mark when he was in there. Aman scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Some close foul calls limited his action and he received his fifth with over 14 minutes to go in the game.
Mayville State struggled from the three point line hitting just 2-of-17 three point shots in the game.
The Comets next action will be on Friday, February 11th, 2011 as they will be in Rapid City, South Dakota taking on Dakota State University. Mayville State is now 8-15 on the season.
