Men's Basketball Goes 1-1 on the Road

The Mayville State men's basketball team traveled to Mitchell, SD this weekend to play two games in the DWU Fulton State Bank Classic. The classic featured the men's and women's teams from Dakota Wesleyan University, Mayville State University, Mount Marty College, and Oglala Lakota College.

The Comets began the weekend by playing the host team, Dakota Wesleyan University. Mayville State entered the game with a 1-1 record while the Tigers were 0-0. Both teams came out with high energy and defensive pressure to begin the game. The Comets shot 40% from behind the arc in the first half, but shot only 36% overall. The Tigers were held scoreless from behind in the first half and shot 35% overall. The first half defensive battle was five seconds from ending with the Comets behind 20-25 until senior forward Steven Ivory Jr. hit a 65 foot shot at the buzzer to bring the Comets within two at the break.

Mayville State jumped out to a five point lead to start the second half and the two teams battled the rest of the way. In the end, the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan came away with their first win of the season beating the Comets by a final score of 61-54. Steven Ivory Jr. led the Comets in scoring and rebounding posting a 16 point and 10 rebound double-double. Sam Hyman added 14 points to the board for the Comets in his first game in blue after missing the first two games due to injury.

Mayville State took on the Lancers of Mount Marty College in the second game of the weekend. Coming off a win the previous night, the Lancers entered the contest with a record of 1-0 while the Comets were 1-2. Mayville came out with another strong defensive effort holding the Lancers to 17 first half points and an overall field goal percentage of 24%. MSU put in 28 points in the first half and shot an overall 54% from the field. Austin Emerson led the first half offensive attack with eight points. Dexter Elliot brought high energy and defensive intensity off the bench for the Comets.

Mayville held steady during the second half and stretched their lead to 14 points with just over three minutes to go. A couple of steals and quick baskets by the Lancers cut the lead down to just four points, but the Comets were able to hang tough for a 53-46 victory. Austin Emerson put up 13 points on the board and grabbed a game high nine rebounds. Matt Bauduin finished the game making free throws down the stretch to add nine points and dished out seven assists. The team defense of the Comets held the Lancers to just 29% from the field and 24% from behind the arc.

The Mayville State men's basketball team is now 2-2 on the year. The Comets are back in action one week from today on Saturday, November 10 when they travel down to Sioux Falls to take on the University of Sioux Falls in an exhibition contest.
