Vikings spoil home finale; Defeat Lady Comets 88-72

Mayville State University held their final home game of 2011-12 against their bitter rival Valley City State University on February 18, 2012. The game would be the final time our home crowd would watch Erin EricsonHannah Wenaas, and Megan Groen play at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets also would say goodbye to Ashley Holmstrom who hasn't been in action for better than a month.

The efforts of those four seniors in their time at Mayville State will not soon be forgotten. We would like to extend a thank you to them for everything they've done for the University and the program.

The Vikings and Comets were in a game with playoff implications for the post-season A.I.I. tournament. Valley City came out ready to spoil the afternoon as they got out to a quick start right off the tip. The Vikings built a quick lead before the Comets started battling back. After a quick run to end the half the Vikings were up 42-33 on the Comets.

Mayville State didn't back down as the Comets started hitting three's in the second half. Sabrina Rude and Ericson were on fire in the second half. The two led the team in scoring with 16 points each. Rude knocked down four shots from beyond the arch, while Ericson hit three.

Ericson also came close to a major career milestone as she was 19 points shy of her 1,000th career point in Comet blue. The senior finished just three points shy at the end of the night.

Valley City was able to hold the Comets off and close the game on a run to put it away, winning 88-72.

The Vikings were led by Alyssa Hummel offensively. Hummel finished with 23 points and eight rebounds. The Comets will now have to wait to find out if their season will continue or not. Alison Scherr followed with 19 points.

This game drops the Comets to 14-12 in 2011-12.
