The first time Mayville State University played Valley City in women's basketball this season, it was a forgettable night for the Comets on offense. The team shot just 32% from the floor as the Vikings came out on top 55-45. Saturday afternoon was a much different story.
The Comets came out firing on all cylinders as five players finished in double figures. The team shot 57% from the floor for the game including an amazing 11-for-22 effort from beyond the arch. Valley City saw two familiar faces knocking in three-point shots today as
Erin Ericson and
Hailey Longtin each hit three shots from the outside.
The one they may not have been expecting was the Comets freshman guard,
Sabrina Rude. Rude came off the bench to score 11 points, grab five rebounds and play a big role in the Comets victory today. Rude was 4-for-8 from the floor including 3-of-7 behind the three-point line. Her production off the bench was crucial to the success of the Comets.
Longtin finished the night as the games top scorer. The sophomore scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Longtin played very well on offense as she attacked the Vikings from all angles. She was very difficult to guard in this game.
Ericson followed with 13 points. She did a lot of damage early in the game when the Comets were first building their lead. She made some big shots right away to get the offense going and to open up her other teammates.
Kay Laforet and
Megan Groen both added 12 points and were very efficient offensively. Groen was 5-for-9 from the floor and Laforet was 5-for-6. The two guards did a great job handling pressure from the Viking guards.
The difference from this game to the first match-up was night and day. The Comets almost scored more points in the second half of this game (44) then they did the entire first game (45) with the Vikings. Anytime you have five players score in double figures and shoot that well from the floor, you make yourself very tough to beat.
Every game counts at this point of the season and picking up a road win against a rival is a big lift for this team. Hopefully the momentum from this game will carry over throughout rest of the season.
This win improves the Comets to 14-9 this season. The teams next action will be an exhibition match-up with the University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday, February 7
th, 2012 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This game is a prelude to the rubber match with Dickinson State University on Friday, February 11
th, 2012.
