The Mayville State men's basketball team traveled to Jamestown College on Thursday night to face the 2013 DAC Tip-Off Classic Champion Jimmies in a conference contest.
The first few minutes of the game saw both teams get off to a good offensive start with the Comets gaining the upper hand.
Adam Edwards helped jump start Mayville State by scoring the first four points of the game for the Comets. The offensive pace would slow a little as the first half turned into a defensive battle. With 10 seconds to go in the first half the Comets held a four point lead when
Michael Lindsay drove the lane and found
Cody Coauette on a back door cut for a layup to close the half giving Mayville a 27-21 lead at the break.
The Comets were solid from the field in the first half shooting 46% from the field and 43% from behind the arc.
Austin Emerson led the way in scoring with 11 points on 4-9 shooting including 3-6 from behind the arc. The Comets held Jamestown College to a less productive first half on the offensive end as the Jimmies ended shooting 36% from the field and 20% from behind the arc.
The second half of play was back and forth for the 20 minutes as each team fought to gain the upper hand. With nine seconds to play the Comets found themselves in front by three points. After a timeout and a side line inbounds the Jimmies shook free from the MSU defense and sank a three pointer with no time left on the clock to send the game into overtime. With five extra minutes to decide the winner the Comets stepped up and made big plays down the stretch to come away with a 72-66 OT victory.
Mayville State held Jamestown College to 45% shooting from the field and 31% from behind the arc. The Comets shot 52% from the field and 47% from behind the arc.
Steven Ivory Jr. led all scorers with 23 points on 9-13 shooting from the field and 5-8 from the FT line.
Austin Emerson finished with 19 points while going 5-10 from range.
Cody Coauette gave the Comets another 11 points and
Adam Edwards came just short of a double-double scoring eight points while grabbing a game high 11 rebounds. Dexter Elliot chipped in five points and
Sam Hyman and
James Herr each hit key three point buckets at crucial moments in the game.
The Comets are off until Saturday, February 2
nd when they play host to the Vikings of Valley City State University. Game time is set for 6pm.
