MAYVILLE, ND – Mayville State closed out its first home game in almost three weeks with another victory and a brief scare.
Marcisa McMillan had 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead No. 19 Mayville State to a 66-55 victory over Dakota State on Wednesday night.
Hailey Longtin added 17 points and
Liza Hoglo chipped in eight points for the host Comets (18-2, 5-1 A.I.I.), who won their seventh consecutive game at home.
Mayville got a scare in the first half when the team shot just 31% from the floor (10-32) while going 2-18 from the three point line. A made three pointer at the buzzer by Cassie Jacobsen sent the Trojans into the locker room with the lead at 25-24.
The Comets found the range in the second half as the team converted 48 percent of its shots compared to 34 percent for Dakota State.
Dakota State was led by Jacobsen with 18 points in the game on 7-15 shooting from the floor. Mayville State did a great job defensively holding the Trojans leading scorer, Kylie Westover (16 ppg) to under half her season average with just seven points.
The Comets stretched their lead all the way to 16 points with just under three minutes to play behind the strong play of McMillan on the inside and Longtin on the outside.
As a team the Comets made 25 field goals and had 17 of them came off an assist.
Samantha Heier led the team again in assists with six in the game.
The Trojans committed 18 turnovers to 14 for Mayville. The Comets also won the battle of the boards, 40-31.
The Comets have taken the first game of the two-game season series with the Trojans. These two teams will meet again on February 6
th in Madison, SD.
Before the Comets and Trojans lock up again they will host the Valley City State University Vikings (18-5, 6-3 A.I.I.) on Saturday, February 2
nd at 4:00 p.m. in Mayville.
