#16 ranked Comets extend winning streak to 11 with rivalry game blowout.

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Comet women's basketball team extended their win streak to 11 games on Saturday night as they defeated the Valley City State University Vikings 76-58 in front of a raucous crowd at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse.

MSU got out to an early first half lead, but was unable to extend the advantage due to an off night at the free throw line.

The Comets had shot 71.4 percent at the foul line coming into this game and were just 11-of-21 in the first half and finished 29-for-45 in the game. Those missed opportunities kept the Vikings hopes alive.

By the end of the first 20 minutes of action the Comets had built a comfortable 40-29 lead. Hailey Longtin led the Comets in the first half with nine points, Liza Hoglo and Marcisa McMillan each added seven for MSU for the bulk of the first half scoring.

Valley City came out ready to give the Comets everything they could handle in the second half cutting the Comet lead to 50-47 with 8:52 remaining after an Ashli Lee three-pointer.

McMillan calmed the nerves of Comet fans with a basket off a Hailey Longtin assist on the ensuing possession. Hoglo rebounded a Brittany Lehner miss, got herself to the free throw line, and converted both attempts and the Comets were back up by seven points.

VCSU would get it down to four one more time but the Comets had another run in them to close them out.

At 55-51 MSU used an 8-1 run to extend their lead back up to 11 points. Sabrina Rude and Sam Heier provided the scoring during that spurt as Rude knocked down a mid-range jumper, Heier hit two free throws, Rude hit two free throws, and Heier added two more as the Comets began to pull away.

While free throw shooting was holding the Comets back in the first half, the team made 16-of-19 over the final eight minutes after VCSU cut the lead down to one possession at 50-47.

Hoglo had a nice overall effort with 18 points and 12 rebounds. She knocked down 10-of-13 from the free throw line and was 4-of-8 from the floor.

Right on her heels was McMillan with 18 points of her own to go along with five rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Sam Heier was the third and final Comet to score double digits with 14 points. She also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds in the game to go along with three steals and two assists.

Rounding out the scoring for MSU was: Rude (9), Longtin (9), Angela Tauer (5), and Erica Henrikson (3).

The Comets (16-2, 2-0 NSAA) are currently ranked No. 16 in the NAIA and will likely move up after a win over No. 3 ranked Jamestown earlier this week to go along with tonight's runaway win against VCSU.

The next game for the Mayville State women is on Wednesday, January 29th, 2013 as they travel to Madison, SD to take on Dakota State University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
