The Mayville State University men's basketball team opened their regular season by hosting the Providence University College Pilots on Friday night in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets, under the new leadership of Coach
Darren Tighe, were looking to make an impression on the home crowd, MSU did exactly that.
After a bit of a slow start, the Comets were able to find their groove, going on a 20-2 run midway through the first half with
Daniel Lindgren (Enderlin, ND) and Eric Staelber (Morris, MN) leading the way. The Comets were able to take advantage of mistakes by Providence and that led to quick points for the home team.
MSU held strong defensively and continued to find ways to put the ball in the bucket through the first half. The Comets went into the locker room with a 53-23 lead.
The second half saw much of the same, the Comets were able to turn their tough defense into offense, converting 21 Pilot turnovers into 24 Comets points. MSU was also able to get plenty of players involved throughout the night, getting 54 points from their bench. The Comets were able to cruise to a 111-52 win, hoping to keep building momentum early in the season.
Daniel Lindgren led the Comets with 20 points, Eric Staeber followed that up with 17 of his own. Gorg Alhag added 14 points and seven boards for the Comets.
The Comets are back in action next Wednesday at home against Peru State College, tipoff is set for 7:00 PM.
