The Mayville State University men's basketball team hosted Peru State College tonight in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. Peru State College is part of the Heart of America Athletic Conference and entered tonight's matchup with a 87-63 win over Valley City State University on the season.
The Comets were able to jump ahead early in the first half, building an eleven point lead with some nice shooting from behind the arc from Gorg Alhag and
Taylor Delaughter. From there, the Bobcats started to turn things around in their favor, trimming the MSU lead down to two with ten minutes to play in the first half. The rest of the half was back and forth, anytime it seemed like Peru State would pull away, MSU was able to respond and battle back. The Bobcats went into the locker room at half with a 36-35 lead
The start of the second half saw both teams trade baskets and keep things close early on, but MSU ran into a scoring drought midway through the half. The Comets couldn't find a bucket from the 14:37 mark of the second half to the 7:35 mark with
Cameron Epps finally scoring a basket. Even with the drought, MSU only found themselves down by ten with five minutes to play.
The last five minutes saw both teams trading baskets, MSU needed defensive stops late, but couldn't stop the Bobcats from scoring on key possessions. The Comets were able to keep things close with the shooting of
Daniel Lindgren, but Peru State was able to make free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach for MSU. The final score ended up 79-70.
Lindgren had a huge night, scoring 30 points. Gorg Alhag added nine points and eleven boards, and
Garek Droog,
Cameron Epps, and
Eric Staebler added seven points a piece.
MSU continues action this Saturday evening against Briar Cliff University, tipoff is set for 5:00 PM.
