FARGO, ND – The Mayville State Lady Comets took to the Scheels Center court inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex to face the North Dakota State Bison at a 5pm tip-off on Friday night. The match-up was an exhibition for the Bison, as they are just starting their season with some preseason games, while the Lady Comets came into the night with 4 straight wins.
Things started on a tough note for the Comets, as NDSU had the hot hand early and climbed up to a 22-11 score in their favor as the first quarter ended. The Comets had a rough time getting good shots and the Bison took advantage of it. Finding the bucket continued to be a struggle for the Comets, as the 2nd quarter closed the Comets were shooting 25% from the field. Even with a good 36-19 lead at the half, the Bison were also struggling with their shooting, as the Comets were able to hold strong on defense and hold them to 31.5% shooting.
After the adjustments at halftime, the Comets were able to find some buckets right away, but turnovers and poor shooting on the Comets' end started to really shift the momentum to the Bison. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Comets put up another 13 on the board, while the Bison raised the lead to 25 with a score of 57-32. The game continued to stay in the driver's seat for the Bison, as they hit 7-14 from behind the arc in the second half, which added more to their lead. The Comets continued to fight onward, as Andi Gayner and Joelle Ertl created some offense as the game clock trickled down. In the end, the Comets fell to the Bison with a score of 87-43.
"I just felt like we never got into a rhythm the entire night. We did not shoot the ball well and turned the ball over way too much", as Comets Head Coach
Dennis Hutter explained about his team's performance. "I thought the kids played hard, we just did not play with a lot of chemistry tonight. It's always good to play bigger, faster teams, even when it does not go well. If we can learn from tonight, it can help us tomorrow."
Leading all scorers was the Bison's Taylor Thunstedt with 21. For the Lady Comets, Gayner led with 9 points and also pulled down 4 rebounds. Naomi Torgerson chipped in 7 points, led the team in rebounds with 7, and picked up 4 steals on the night. Karleigh Weber, Joelle Ertil, and Kylee Heurung each had 6 points to round out the top scorers. In rebounds, the Bison had the edge with 49 on the night to only 36 for the Comets.
Next action for the Comets is at home inside the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM when they take on the #3 team in the country, Concordia University.
