Late Surge Pushes Comets Past Jimmies


Mayville State stole the lead late and defeated the University of Jamestown 13-8 on Tuesday evening. The game was tied 8-8 with the Comets batting in the bottom of the seventh when Adrian Zubia doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.

MSU earned the victory despite allowing the Jimmies to score five runs in the seventh, the offensive onslaught by Jamestown was led by Zach Zurburgg, Drake Pilat, Kaleb Binstock, and Tanner Roundy, who all drove in runs in the inning.

Gabe Lizarraga was credited with the victory for the Comets after surrendering one run on four hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one. Tait Ludwick and Julian Ortiz entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Craig Broadman started the game for Mayville State, giving up no runs on no hits over three innings, striking out one.

Austin Pesicka took the loss for Jamestown after allowing two hits and three runs over one-third of an inning. Dakota Nelson started the game for the Jimmies. He surrendered two runs on five hits over four innings, striking out two and walking zero.

Overall, the Comets saw the ball well today, racking up 17 hits in the game. Jared McCorrister, Brady Nygaard, Zachary Foster, and Jonathan Pluth all managed multiple hits in the game. McCorrister led Mayville State University Comets with four hits in five at bats, and MSU tallied one home run on the day when Nygaard went deep in the fourth inning.

Pilat went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Jamestown at the plate.
