VALLEY CITY, ND -- A two-run second inning propelled the Mayville State University Comets baseball team to a win over rival Valley City State, 5-4, in a nine-inning contest at Valley City's Charlie Brown Brown Stadium Tuesday night.
But the two-run second was matched with a two-run inning by Valley City late, as the Vikings countered with a two-run sixth, cutting it to a 4-3 game.
Mayville State jumped out to the 3-0 lead in the third inning. With a 1-1 count and two outs,
Marcus Hughes hit a single to center field, scoring
Theo May and
Kyle Maunahan. That was combined with
Quinton Bidon's sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Marcus Wohl, in the first inning.
David Demeter made it 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning, when David Demeter doubled to left on an 0-and-2 pitch, scoring Adam Thompson.
Mayville State increased the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning, on an Adrian Zuba single, to center field, on the first pitch he saw. Wohl scored on an errant catch by Valley City center fielder JT Reed.
The Comets made it 5-3 in the top of the eighth on a
Michael Theisen sac fly to left, scoring Wohl.
Valley City State attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run on a fielders choice. The comeback was stopped when Demetree Jest was caught stealing for the final out of the inning.
The Comets finish the fall season 3-0.
