Comets Move Up in NAIA Rankings

The latest edition of the 2019-2020 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll was released on Wednesday morning, and the Mayville State women's basketball team continues to climb in the national rankings after their 69-55 win over Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday night.

The Comets moved up three spots and now sit at No. 20 in the latest rankings. Other notable teams receiving votes for the Top 25 are the University of Jamestown and Bellevue - the Comets defeated the Jimmies back on November 1 and will face off against the Bruins on Bellevue's campus in mid-January. Another future opponent for the Comets, Morningside, moved all the way up to the No. 8 spot after being ranked No. 19 the previous week. Mayville State will travel to Sioux City, Iowa for a matchup against Morningside on December 29.

The Top 25 poll is voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, Association of Independent Institutions and Unaffiliated Groups. The poll is then determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 30 points for each first-place vote, 29 for second place and so on through the list. The highest and lowest ranking for each team (a non-rating is considered a low rating) is removed and the team's ranking will be recalculated with an additional point added to each team for every ballot (including discounted ballots) that the teams appear on.

The Comets will look to keep climbing the rankings next week after another matchup against Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday night, this time in Morris, Minn. Mayville State will then open up their conference schedule with a North Star matchup against Presentation in Aberdeen, S.D. on Saturday, December 7.
