The Comet women's and men's basketball teams will be back on the court tonight when they travel to Morris, Minn. for a matchup against the Minnesota-Morris Cougars for the second time in a week. The men's teams will square off first tonight and the women will get the second game of the doubleheader this time around. Both MSU teams were able to get victories over the Cougars last week with Coach Hutter's team getting a 69-55 win and Coach Tighe's squad putting away Morris 82-67.
In the women's game, the Comets took advantage of a big second quarter to build a comfortable lead, outscoring the Cougars 21-5 in that frame. From there, both teams went back and forth for much of the second half, with Mayville State able to fend off a couple comeback runs from the Cougars down the stretch behind some nice shooting from
Nicole Bunting.
Claire Blascziek finished the game with 15 points and Bunting added another 14 to lead the Comets in scoring last week.
The men's team was able to use a big first half to build a 20-point lead, then matched scoring runs with Morris in the second half to put away the Cougars. Morris did cut the lead to eight points at one point in the second half, but a key 10-0 run out of a Coach Tighe timeout built the Comet lead for good and gave them their sixth win of the season. MSU was led in scoring by
Latrelle Franklin's 22 points and
Max Cooper added a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards that night.
The men's game will tip off tonight at 5:30 p.m. and the women will follow with a 7:15 p.m. scheduled start time. Fans can tune in to watch tonight's games on the
Cougar Sports Network and can also follow along with live stats during the game.
