Comets Fall to Dakota Wesleyan
Mayville State stayed in it until the end, but Dakota Wesleyan was able to pull ahead late in a 6-5 victory on Saturday. The game was tied at five with Dakota Wesleyan batting in the top of the tenth when Adriana Sprakel hit a solo homer.
The Comets captured the lead in the second inning when
Dayna Gutierrez doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring
Brooke Roeges and
Shaye Kemball to make it a 3-1 Comet lead. Gutierrez added another RBI in the fourth, driving in Roeges again.Â
Then
Jade Ledochowski connected on a line drive to right field that scored
Rebecca McKown to give Mayville State a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers tied things up at five when Sprakel was able to tag up from third on a sac fly, she then tacked on the go-ahead home run in extra innings to cap off her day.Â
Sierra Haage was in the pitcher's circle for Dakota Wesleyn University. She allowed 11 hits and five runs over ten innings, striking out six.
Shaye Kemball started the game for the Comets. She went five and a third innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out three.
Annika Seedborg threw four and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.
Mayville State tallied 11 hits. Gutierrez, Roeges, and Ledochowski all managed multiple hits for the Comets. Gutierrez led Mayville State with three hits in four at bats.
MSU Gets First Win
Mayville State got out to a four-run lead in the third inning and held on for a 7-6 victory over York College in their second game on Saturday. York College scored two runs late in the failed comeback with Nicole Ovelheira providing RBIs in the rally, but the Comet defense held on to get their first win of the season.
Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. The Comets collected 11 hits on the day and York College had nine.
Mayville State got on the board in the first inning when
Shaye Kemball homered on a 2-1 count, scoring three runs.
The Comets then notched three runs in the second inning, led by singles from
Dayna Gutierrez and Kemball and an error on a ball put in play by
Tai Yamamoto.
Annika Seedborg was in the circle for Mayville State. She lasted two innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out four and walking one.
Gutierrez, Kemball,
Sierra Niedge, and
Lindsey Swanson each collected two hits to lead the way for the Comets.
York College totaled nine hits. Gabriela Alvarez led the Cardinals with three hits in four at bats.
