Comets 12, Vikings 10
The Comets took game one in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off home run from
Jared McCorrister to topple Valley City State 12-10. The game was tied at ten with the Comets batting in the bottom of the ninth when McCorrister put one deep on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs and completing the comeback win.
McCorrister led Mayville State to victory by driving in four runs in the game. He went 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in runs on a single in the fourth, a single in the seventh, and his home run in the ninth.
The Vikings got things moving in the first inning with five runs, Aiden Brook provided a three-run home run on the first pitch of his at bat, making it 4-0. Emmanuel Leyva added one more in the inning with his RBI single. VCSU also tacked on four runs in the third to make it 9-1 before the Comets began their comeback.Â
Mayville State was able to get something going after tallying four runs in the fifth inning. The Comets scored those runs with a grand slam shot over the left field fence from
Jon Pluth to make it 9-7.
Then later,
Brady Nygaard doubled in the bottom of the seventh to bring in two runs to give the Comets a 10-9 lead, but the Vikings would respond with a run in the ninth to set up the walk-off shot from McCorrister in the bottom half of the inning.
Zach Giesbrecht was the winning pitcher for the Comets. He allowed one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out three.
Adam Senden,
Tait Ludwick, and
Josh Rodriguez all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory. Rodriguez recorded the last three outs to earn the save for MSU.
Christian Peery took the loss for Valley City State. He allowed five hits and five runs over three and a third innings, striking out two and walking none.
The Comets totaled 11 hits in game one. McCorrister, Nygaard, and
Adrian Zubia all collected multiple hits to lead the way for MSU.Â
Comets 6, Vikings 10
The Comets fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 10-6 loss to the Vikings in game two of the doubleheader. Valley City State scored on an RBI single from Aiden Brook and a sacrifice fly from Jorun Hamre to make it 2-0 in the first inning.
Kyle Maunahan responded with a solo home run in the second to bring the Comets within a run, but the Vikings came back with a run in the third and two more in the fifth to build the lead to 5-1.Â
VCSU was able to pull away for good after scoring five runs in the seventh inning. The offensive firepower from the Vikings was led by Austin Smith, Aiden Brook, and Christian Peery, all driving in runs in the inning.
The Comets managed to make it somewhat interesting in the bottom of the seventh, with four runs of their own.
Brady Nygaard,
Kyle Maunahan,
Dayne Fredland, and
Riley Nelson each drove in runs to make it 10-6.
Despite the loss, the Comets did collect eight hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Valley City State had ten hits on the way to victory.
Jacob Miller got the start for the Vikings. He surrendered one run on two hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out two.
