Comets Split with V-Hawks Friday

Comets 2, V-Hawks 1
The Comets seized victory in dramatic fashion, thanks to a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to topple Viterbo in game one of Friday's doubleheader. The game was tied at one with Mayville State batting in the bottom of the ninth when Quinton Bidon singled on a 2-0 count, scoring Jon Pluth for the game winner.

The pitching was strong on both sides and runs were hard to come by. The V-Hawks got on the board with a run in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Zach Braun.

The ninth inning comeback was set up with a leadoff double from Adrian Zubia, then Pluth singled to right field to advance Zubia to third. Jared McCorrister was able to put one deep enough for a sacrifice fly on the next at bat, scoring Zubia to tie it up at one.

Two batters later, Bidon delivered a line drive up the middle to bring in Pluth for the game winning run in game one.

Austin Herrington got the start for the Comets. He went five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven.

Sam Torsey was on the hill for Viterbo. He lasted eight and a third innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five.

Bidon went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead MSU in hits.

Comets 4, V-Hawks 5
The Comets stayed in it until the end, but the V-Hawks pulled away late in a 5-4 victory in the second. The game was tied at three with Viterbo batting in the top of the eleventh when Noah Bouley's sac fly scored a run for Viterbo to take the lead 4-3, the next batter singled to bring in Evan Wenberg to make things 5-3.

Mayville State manged to bring one across in the bottom of the eleventh, but dropped game two 5-4.

Kyle Gilbertson was on the pitcher's mound for Viterbo. He lasted five and a third innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out seven.

Gabe Lizarraga toed the rubber for the Comets. He surrendered three runs on six hits over six innings, striking out two. Kenny Stewart and Adam Senden entered the game from the bullpen, throwing four innings and one inning respectively.
