Comets 17, V-Hawks 11
Four hits from
Quinton Bidon paved the way to victory for the Comets over Viterbo 17-11 on Saturday in game one of the doubleheader. Bidon singled in the first, singled in the second, singled in the sixth, and singled in the seventh to lead the way at the plate for Mayville State.
There was plenty of action on the basepaths as the Comets collected 18 hits and managed 17 runs in the game. Viterbo made things interesting and put up three runs in the eighth inning, things were powered by Adam Lowe, DJ Wilson, and Evan Wenberg, each were able to move runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning to make it 16-11 Comets.Â
But, Mayville State was able to add one more in the bottom of the eighth to get the win in game one of the doubleheader.Â
Josh Rodriguez got the start for the Comets. He lasted six innings, allowing five hits and seven runs while striking out eight and walking one.
Mayville State saw the ball well today, racking up 18 hits in the game. Bidon,
Brady Nygaard, Zubia,
Paxton Ketchum, and
Kyle Maunahan each managed multiple hits for the Comets.
DJ Wilson went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the V-Hawks in hits for game two. Viterbo was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Lowe made the most plays with six.
Comets 7, V-Hawks 9
The Comets stayed in it until the end, but Viterbo pulled away late in a 9-7 victory in game two. The V-Hawks capitlized on a big fifth inning to take the lead and hold off any comeback effort from Mayville State.
Viterbo scored on RBI singles from Myles Sandeen and Jake Kleszcynski in the fifth, they also scored after a batter was hit by a pitch and scored two off of a Comet error in the inning.
The V-Hawks tacked on another run in the sixth with a Nolan Glunz solo home run. The Comets answered with one of their own when
Evyn Yamaguchi singled on a 0-1 count, bringing in
Brodey Rochell to make it 7-6 Viterbo.
Sandeen put things away in the seventh with a 2-run home run to put the V-Hawks up 9-6 and give them the eventual win.
Joe Cliver was on the hill for Viterbo. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and five runs while striking out one.
Craig Broadman led things off on the mound for the Comets. He went four and a third innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
Tait Ludwick threw two and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.
MSU had eight hits in the game.
Kyle Maunahan and
Quinton Bidon each managed two hits to lead the way for the Comets.
Viterbo totaled ten hits. Sandeen and Noah Bouley all collected multiple hits for the V-Hawks.Â
