Comets Sweep Vikings at Home

Comets 4, Vikings 3
A walk-off error led the Comets past Valley City State 4-3 in game one of the doubleheader on Wednesday.

The game was tied at three in the bottom of the ninth with Quinton Bidon at the plate with the bases loaded, Bidon was able to drive a 1-1 pitch on the ground that made it past the VCSU infielder to bring Paxton Ketchum in for the walk-off win.

It was a struggle to find runs throughout much of the game, but the Comets got things moving in the second inning when Riley Nelson singled on a 1-1 count, scoring a run. The Vikings responded with a home run from Aiden Brook in the fourth.

The game was tied at two in the eighth when Evyn Yamaguchi singled in Brodey Rochell to take a 3-2 lead. VCSU came back in the top of the ninth with a leadoff double from Brook, the next batter singled to bring him in and tie the game at three and to set the stage for the walk-off in the bottom half of the inning.

Zach Giesbrecht ended up getting the victory for the Comets in his relief duty. He surrendered no runs and no hits with a strikeout in the ninth inning.

Austin Herrington started the game for Mayville State. He went eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Chris Peery started the game for VCSU. He went three innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out two and walking zero

VCSU launched two home runs on the day. Austin Smith had a four bagger in the sixth inning. Brook went for the long ball in the fourth inning.

Bidon led the Comets with three hits in four at bats in game one.

Valley City State totaled six hits. Brook and Smith both managed multiple hits to lead the way for the Vikings.

Comets 4, Vikings 3
The Comets won game two, once again, 4-3 over the Vikings in a game that was close throughout.

The Comets got on the board in the second inning when Quinton Bidon went deep over the left field fence for a 2-run homer to make it 2-0 MSU. Then Paxton Ketchum came across the plate in the third on a sac fly from Brady Nygaard to make it 3-0.

The Vikings would come back with two runs in the fifth, but Mayville State would answer in the bottom half of the inning with a triple from Nygaard that scored Jon Pluth to make it 4-2.

VCSU would come back with a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice, but that's as close as they would get. The Comet pitching closed the door and got the 4-3 victory in seven innings.

Josh Rodriguez led the Comets to victory on the mound. He allowed six hits and three runs over four innings, striking out three and walking one.

Phillip Almanza toed the rubber for Valley City State. He went three innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out two and walking one.

Craig Broadman started the game for the Comets. He allowed two hits and no runs over three innings, striking out one.

MSU totaled six hits in game two. Pluth and Nygaard each managed two hits to lead the Comets at the plate.

The Vikings racked up eight hits on the day. Aiden Brook and Kody Lane each managed multiple hits for Valley City State.
