It was an unconventional home opener for Mayville State Saturday, as they traveled to Dickinson to take on the Dakota State Trojans, but the Comets were able to sweep both games against the Trojans.
Game One: Mayville State 7, Dakota State 2
Mayville State jumped out to an early lead over Dakota State University and took home a 7-2 victory on Saturday. They took the lead on a single in the first inning.
Austin Herrington got the win for the Comets. He allowed five hits and two runs over eight innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Kenny Stewart threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Trey Randel took the loss for Dakota State University. He went four innings, allowing five runs on six hits.
Mayville State socked one home run on the day.
Jared McCorrister went yard in the fourth inning.
The Comets tallied 11 hits. McCorrister,
Jon Pluth, Zach Foster, and
Adrian Zubia each collected multiple hits for Mayville State. Pluth and McCorrister each managed three hits to lead Mayville State. Pluth led the Comets with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with five stolen bases.
Game Two: Mayville State 6, Dakota State 0
Gabe Lizarraga didn't allow a single run as Mayville State defeated Dakota State University 6-0 on Saturday in the secodn game of the doubleheader. Lizarraga allowed just four hits.
Comets secured the victory thanks to six runs in the second inning.
Adrian Zubia,
Riley Nelson, and
Jon Pluth powered the big inning with RBIs.
Mayville State opened up scoring in the second inning. Zubia singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.
A single by Marcos Alvarez in the second inning was a positive for Dakota State University.
Lizarraga pitched Mayville State to victory. He allowed four hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.
Adam Berryhill took the loss for Dakota State University. He lasted four innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out three and walking one.
Quinto Bidon went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Mayville State in hits. The Comets stole seven bases during the game as two players stole more than one.
