Game One: Dakota State 4, Mayville State 1
In a non-traditional home opener for the Comet softball team, Mayville State stayed strong throughout, but the fifth inning was the heartbreaker for the Comets, as Xitlali Lopez took a one-two pitch and sent it over the fence, sealing Mayville State's fate, as the Comets fell 4-1 at Casselton's Kost Field.
Due to snow still being on the grounds at the Comets' new home, Jerome Berg Field, the weekend series against the Trojans had to be moved to an alternate location.
Jayme Knauer's grounder to
Annika Seedborg allowed Melissa Krapf to score, giving Dakota State the 1-0 lead with just one out in the first inning. But Seedborg and the Comets were able to escape the rest of the first inning unscathed, as the Comets set the remainder of the batters down in order.
Mayville State tied it in the bottom of the first inning, as senior
Amanda Izzo scored on an error by Dakota State first baseman Kaysea Luna.
It was a battle throughout the rest of the game, until the top of the fifth, when the Trojans blew the game open.
Mayville State was led at the plate by Izzo, who finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. All three hits for Izzo were singles.
Nicole Bunting and
Dayna Gutierrez were each 1-for-4.
Laura Spurgeon was 1-for-3.
Seedborg took the loss on the mound, pitching a complete game. She gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out seven Trojan batters.
