The Comets opened up their postseason with a loss on Thursday afternoon, MSU lost to Viterbo 2-1 in a game that was a struggle to find offense. Both teams were strong on the rubber on, but the V-Hawks managed to get two runs across - one in the first and one in the third inning to gain the lead. Once Viterbo had the lead, Caitlyn Kozik was able to hold off any Comet comeback effort, she went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, striking out two and walking one.
Shaye Kemball started the game for Mayville State and took the loss in game one. Kemball went seven innings, giving up the two runs on five hits, striking out seven and walking two.
Viterbo got things started in the first when Sonya McCormick reached base on single, from there she stole second and then stole third, but the throw to third base went into the outfield and McCormick was able to come home to score to make it 1-0 early.
In the bottom of the second inning, Mayville State tied things up when
Tai Yamamoto singled to bring in
Alissa Foster, who by getting hit by a pitch.
The V-Hawks pulled away for good with one run in the third when Brooklyn Ottelien singled to score McCormick again.
Dayna Gutierrez went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Comets.
Sonya McCormick led Viterbo with three hits in four at bats.
The Comets now face off against Dakota State later this afternoon on Tharaldson Field in Valley City, N.D. First pitch is 4 p.m.
