Comets cruise to win against Vikings

MAYVILLE, ND -- The Mayville State University Comets came out Wednesday, less than 24 hours before squeaking past the University of Jamestown, determined to win.

"We did enough to get us through the day (today)," Comets head coach Scott Berry said after the game. "But, we realize that, for as many good things as we did, we found a lot of things that we need to spend a lot of time working on."

Behind a nine-run second inning, the Comets cruised to a 9-5 win over their North Star Athletic Association rivals, the Valley City State University Vikings at Scott Berry Field in Mayville. The win marked Mayville State's second win of the fall season and an undefeated fall season at home.

"We're very happy to have come out on top," Berry said. "We look forward to continuing to grow as a team moving forward."

Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, Mayville State had bases loaded following a walk to Quinton Bidon, followed by Theo May reaching on an error by Valley City and a walk to Kyle Maunahan. As he did last night, Marcus Wohl, starting catcher Wednesday for the Comets, got ahold of the right pitch, sending it to center field on a line drive, scoring Bidon and tying the game 1-0.

The Comets continued to roll.

On the next at-bat, Gunnar Garpestad picked up a walk, scoring May and giving the Comets the 2-1 lead.

Then, Marcus Hughes, freshman infielder, tripled to left field on a line drive, scoring Maunahan, Wohl and Garpestad, increasing the lead to 5-1 and chasing the starting pitcher, bringing in reliever Tyler Kliniske.

Things didn't start out well for Kliniske either, as Hughes scored on a wild pitch, moving Skyler Forst to second base. The troubles continued, as two more batters, loading the bases with nobody out in the second. Kliniske was able to strike out Bidon, but then May was hit by a pitch, scoring Forst.

Still in the second inning, Maunahan reached on an error, scoring De Luca from third, making the score 8-1 in favor of the Comets. Wohl then flew out to Kliniske for the second Comet out of the inning.

Another pitching change took place, as Matthew Suda replaced Kliniske, and the woes continued.

With the bases loaded when Suda came to the mound, one of his first pitches was a passed ball, on which Michael Thiesen scored, making it 9-1 through two innings.

"We rode the big nine-run inning," Berry said. "We did a lot of good things offensively."

Valley City scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, on a two-run single by Drew Nixon, making it 9-3 in favor of the Comets. Two more runs would score in the top of the seventh inning, on a two-run triple by Kyle Leapaldt.

Tait Ludwick picked up the win, pitching five innings. He gave up one run on four hits, while walking and striking out four batters apiece.

Two Comets finished with multi-hit games--Theisen went two-for-two with a run scored, while Marcus Hughes went two-for-four with three runs batted in.

Mayville State (2-0) will now travel to Jamestown next Tuesday for a 6 p.m. game, and to Valley City on October 1, also for a 6 p.m. game.

Valley City (2-4) will host the University of Jamestown on Monday. First pitch for the nine-inning game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
