Dickinson State upsets #24 Mayville State

Box Score
DICKINSON, ND – The Mayville State University Comets, ranked 24th nationally, took to the road for the back-end of a two-game road swing this weekend, travelling to Dickinson on Saturday, taking on a pesky Dickinson State University Blue Hawks team in North Star play. Dickinson State knocked off the 24th-ranked Comets 75-65 to issue Mayville State their first conference loss of the season.

"We didn't execute defensively like we were capable of," Comets head coach Darren Tighe said.

Mayville State was led by two players in double-figures—Max Cooper with a team-high 17 points. Cooper missed scoring a double-double, as he finished with nine rebounds in the loss for Mayville State. Rene Melendez continued his hot hand, nailing three three-pointers, en route to 14 points for the Comets.

Mayville State shot 43 percent from the field, including 50 percent from the three-point line. The Comets struggled from the free-throw line, where they shot four-of-12, for 33 percent.

The Comets will return home next weekend to take on Dickinson State on Friday night, and Valley City State on Saturday.

"We will get back to work and clean this up, and be ready for a big weekend at home," Tighe said.

Mayville State, with the loss, dropped to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in North Star play.
