Valley City, N.D. – The Mayville State University baseball team dropped the final fall game of 2020 to Valley City State Vikings by a final score of 3-0. The Comets head will head into the winter break with a 4-2 record.
Valley City scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning of a single that scored two runs. Hughes reached second base in the fourth inning with one out but a fly out to center and ground out ended the threat. In the fifth inning, Senden singled to left with one out. After advancing to second and a ground out got him to third. The next batter stuck out swinging to end the inning.
Stewart entered the game in relief with runners on first and second with zero outs and got the next batter to ground out to second base. With runners on second and third the next hitter for the Vikings hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in one run and extend the lead to 3-0. The Comets load the bases in the sixth inning off a hit by pitch, a single, and walk with two outs. The next hitter popped out to shortstop to end the last threat the Comets would have in a 3-0 loss.
Matthew Johnston started on the mound for the Comets going 2.1 innings allowing 2 hits, two earned runs, four walks, and three strikeouts. Trevor Schreiner pitched 1.2 innings allowing one hit, one earned run, two walks, and one strikeout. Kenneth Stewart finished the game for MSU, pitching the final four innings allowing four walks and five strikeouts.
The Comet offense could only record five hits and one walk in the loss. Marcus Hughe, Michael Theisen, Jared McCorrister, Adam Senden, and Theo May each tallied a hit in the loss. The Comets will head into the winter break with a 4-2 record.
