Hastings, Neb. – The Comets sweep the Broncos by a final score of 6-3 and 5-0 on Saturday. The Comets move to 6-2 on the regular season.
Game One:
The Comets and Broncos went scoreless through the first two innings of the first game. In the third inning, MSU recorded a lead-off triple from Gunner Garpestad. After a fly out to shallow right field, Wohl flew out to left-field and Garpestad tried to tag up but was thrown out at home and the Comets would not score in the third. In the bottom of the inning, the Broncos scored three runs, on four hits, zero errors on the Comets, and two runners were left on base.
Mayville State would tie the game in the top of the sixth on three hits. Back-to-back doubles by McCorrister and Theisen scored the first run of the game. The next batter DeLuca tripled to left-center field that scored Theisen. DeLuca would later score in the inning and tie the game at six heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Comets added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning on two hits.
A one-out rally scored the three runs for the Comets as Garpestad singled, Villanueva walked, and Wohl was hit by the pitch put the bases loaded with one out. The next batter McCorrister laced a double to right-center that cleared the bases and gave the Comets the 6-3 victory in the first game. Mayville State finished the first game with six runs, seven hits, and one error. Jared McCorrister tallied three hits in game one with three runs batted in, one walk, and one run scored.
Gunner Garpestad tallied two hits, and one run scored in the game. Theisen and DeLuca each tallied one run scored, one hit, and one runs batted in. Trevor Schreiner tallied a win on the mound for the Comets pitching 2.0 innings allowing one hit. Connor DiNaro started on the mound for MSU going 4.0 innings allowing seven hits, three earned runs, and three strikeouts. Jesse O'Connell recorded 1.0 innings allowing one hit.
Game Two:
The Comets scored first in the second game scoring two runs in the second inning. Three straight walks with one out in the second inning before Garpestad was hit by a pitch that scored the first run for the Comets. Villanueva, later in the inning, reached first base on a fielder's choice that scored Senden to give MSU a 2-0 lead.
Mayville State added a third run in the top of the third inning on a DeLuca single that scored Theisen and extend the lead to three. MSU would add two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Skylar Forst to extend the lead to five heading into the final half-inning. The Comets finished game two with five runs on five hits and tallied one fielding error.
Payton DeLuca tallied two hits, one run scored, and one run batted in the victory over the Broncos. Marcus Wohl, Skylar Forst, and Theo May each tallied one hit in the second game. Josh Rodriguez picked up the win on the mound for the Comets going 5.0 innings, five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Kenneth Stewart pitched 2.0 innings allowing one hit and striking out three.
The Comets and Broncos meet up for one game starting at 12:00 pm tomorrow from Hastings.
