Comets comeback falls short in non-conference game against Blue Hawks

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Men's Basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Dickinson State Tuesday night by a final score of 93-87. The Comets drop to 2-1 heading into Thanksgiving break.

Mayville State and Dickinson State traded baskets through the first five minutes of the game, as the Blue Hawks held a one-point lead heading into a timeout. MSU was trailing by nine with 10:18 left in the first half before the Comets crawled back into the game and tie it at 31 with 4:06 left in the first half. With the game tied at 37 with 3:10 left in the first half, Mayville State would score the next four points to take a 41-37 lead. DSU would sink two free throws at the end of the half to cut the lead to two.

After the Comets took a six-point advantage early in the second half, DSU would score the next six to tie the game at 47. About four minutes into the second half the Blue Hawks would go on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to take a six-point lead over the Comets. Dickinson State would continue to extend their lead and had a 16-point lead with five minutes left in the game.

After a personal foul by Dickinson State, Mayville State would go on a 12-2 run to cut the lead down to seven with 2:54 left in the game. After a bucket from the Blue Hawks, a Thomas Gieske two-point bucket, a steal by Latrelle Franklin, two free throws by Cameron Fisher, and two free throws by Gieske cut the lead to two with 1:46 left in the game.

DSU would score five of the last seven-points to steal a five-point victory over the Comets 93-87. Mayville State shot 49.2 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from behind the arc, 23-of-28 from the free-throw line. MSU also tallied 31 rebounds, 15 points off turnovers, seven second chance points, and 44 points off the bench.

Cameron Fisher and Thomas Gieske each scored 17 points in the game for the Comets, Fisher also recorded two rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Gieske recorded seven rebounds and two steals. Keiron Goodwin and Carl Snyder each tallied 10 points in the loss, Goodwin also recorded three rebounds and two assists. Snyder also pulled in four rebounds in the game.

Latrelle Franklin tallied 16 points off the bench, shooting 5-of-8 from the field, a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, three assists, and two steals. Iker Cruz tallied seven rebounds, four points, and one assist. John Ketchel recorded five assists and two points in the loss. Xavier Towne and Leon Williams recorded a combined nine points off the bench in the loss.

The Comets return to action a week from Wednesday, as they host Trinity Bible College at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The women's game starts at 5:30 pm with the men to start around 7:30 against the Lions.
