Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team outscored the Lions by 15 in the first quarter to cruise to a 77-32 victory. The Comet move to 4-1 on the regular season.
The Comets only had a one-point advantage over the Lions with five minutes left in the first quarter before a 14-0 run to take a 26-11 lead after one-quarter of play. The run was highlighted by three-pointers made by Rocholl and Elfering. Mayville State would score a game-low 14 points in the second quarter but still out-scored the Lions by eight and took a 21-point lead heading into the halftime break.
MSU would produce a 10-0 run over five minutes in the third quarter to jump out to a 38-point lead. The Comets would lead by 35 heading into the final quarter. Mayville State would out-score the Lions by 10 in the final quarter to pick up the 77-32 victory. MSU would finish the game with 30 made field goals, 10 3-pointers, and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Mayville State would shoot 39.5 percent from the field, 33.3 from behind the arc, a season-high 53 rebounds, 19 assists on 30 field goals, and forced 20 turnovers. 14 Comets would score points in the victory, leading them was Grace Cote with 16 points. She also tallied four rebounds, one assist, and one block.
Danneka Voegeli was the only other Comet player in double figures with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals, and one block. Jordan Zrust scored five points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Kayla Rocholl and CJ Decker combined for five points to round out the starting lineup for the Comets.
Sydney Magsam led the bench with eight points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Erin Walcker tallied seven points off the bench, with seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Grace Gerads recorded six points and six rebounds in the victory. Taylor Dean scored five points and tallied three assists off the bench.
The Comets open conference play on Saturday, as they host Presentation College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm against the Saints.
