Women's Basketball strong first half propels them to victory over Saints

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team opened the conference season with a 74-45 victory over the Saints Saturday. The Comets move to 5-1 on the regular season and 1-0 in conference play.

The Comets started the game with a 14-2 run over the first six minutes of the game. Stephanie Miller scored four points in that stretch. MSU only allowed six points in the first quarter and took a 22-6 lead heading into the second quarter. Mayville State would continue to extend their 16-point lead over the second quarter and took a 27-point lead heading into the intermission.

The Comets would have another 14-2 run to start the third quarter to extend the lead to 39 with 4:29 left in the third quarter. Jordan Zrust scored four points during that stretch. Mayville State took a 33-point lead into the final quarter. Mayville State was outscored by four in the fourth quarter but picked up a 75-45 victory in the conference opener.

MSU would shoot 51.8 percent from the field, 26.3 percent from behind the arc, 17 assists on 29 made field goals. They also finished with 37 rebounds, 26 points off turnovers, 31 bench points, and 14 second-chance points. Jordan Zrust led all scorers in the game with 23 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Danneka Voegeli scored 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block. Kayla Rocholl tallied five rebounds and five points in the victory. Grace Cote and CJ Decker each scored two points and dished out two assists in the victory. Decker tallied four rebounds and one steal. Taylor Reilly scored 10 points off the bench with one rebound and a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.

Mayville State is back in action tomorrow at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse as they host Oak Hills Christian College for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
