The Mayville State University baseball team dropped two games this afternoon to Wheaton 4-16 and an extra inning game to William Penn 4-5. With the losses, the Comets drop to 12-7 on the regular season.

Game One:

Wheaton started the game fast with one run in the first inning on a single to right field to score the only run in that inning. The Thunder added four more in the second inning to extend the lead to 5-0. In the very next inning, the Thunder added three more runs to break open the game. Wheaton would add four more insurance runs in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 12-0.

The Comets would get one run in the bottom of the sixth inning off back-to-back doubles from
Michael Theisen and
Jared McCorrister. The Thunder would answer with four more runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 16-1. Mayville State would get three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Dirk Wilson singled to left, that scored
Payton DeLuca, and
Liam Allen. A couple of batters later, Brodey Rocholl singled to right field that scored Wilson.

Gunner Garpestad and
Michael Theisen tallied two hits in the game with Theisen scoring one run.
Marcus Wohl recorded one hit in two at-bats in the first game. McCorrister and Rocholl each tallied one hit and one run batted in. DeLuca and Wilson also tallied one run scored and one hit in the loss.
Tait Ludwick tallied the loss going 5.0 innings, giving up 13 hits, eight earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts.
Jesse O'Connell pitched 2.0 innings in relief giving up 10 hits, eight runs, and three strikeouts.

Game Two:

William Penn scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning off Stohr to give them the 1-0 lead. The Comets would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off a
Gunner Garpestad single to right field, that scored
Skyler Forst. Next batter,
Alex Aguilar hit a fly ball to center field to bring home
Theo May and the second run of the inning.

After back-to-back walks in the top of the fifth inning from Stewart,
Quinton Bidon got the next two hitters out to end the Statesmen threat. William Penn tied the game up in the sixth inning off a Mayville State error that scored the tying run. MSU would put the game-winning run in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning but could not score the run to send the game to extra innings.

The Comets would put the game-winning run on second base with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning but two strikeouts from Forst and Garpestad would end the threat. The Statesmen would score three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead 5-2. The Comets would get the first two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Owen Harms struck out,
Michael Theisen singled to left to load the bases.
Jared McCorrister hit a sacrifice fly to center to score
Marcus Hughes to cut the lead to one. On the sacrifice fly, the centerfielder made an errant throw to advance the runners to second and third with two outs. Forst would strikeout swinging to end the game.

Three Comets tallied two hits in the game: Wohl, Theisen, and Forst. Wohl also recorded a run batted in the game. Garpestad tallied one hit and one run batted in during game two. Hughes tallied one hit and one run scored in two at-bats.
Parker Stohr started on the mound for the Comets going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts.

Kenneth Stewart pitched 0.1 innings out of the bullpen allowing two walks.
Quinton Bidon took the loss this afternoon, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
Bryce Wood tallied the last out for Mayville State, giving up one hit and walking one.

The Comets are back in action tomorrow with a nonconference game against Valley City State University. First pitch is scheduled for 10 am MST/12 pm CST against the Vikings.
