Comets drop both games of the doubleheader to Hastings College by a final score of 5-6 and 0-3. With the losses, the Comets drop to 7-5 on the season.
Game One:
Hastings College scored the first three runs of the game in the third inning. The Broncos scored those three runs on three hits to take the lead on the Comets. The Comets answered in the top of the fourth inning with one run off a ground ball from the bat of
Michael Theisen, which scored
Tyler Ferrera.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Broncos tallied one run on three hits to extend the lead to 4-1. Tino Zach was thrown out at the plate by Theisen that would have extended the lead to four heading into the final two innings. Mayville State would answer right back in the top of the sixth inning with a double from
Marcus Wohl that scored
Marcus Hughes, who reached on an infield single. The Comets cut the lead to 2-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hastings College scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three hits to give the Broncos a four run lead heading into the final inning. The Comets opened the seventh with a double to left by Theisen, who would score off a
Theo May single.
Liam Allen singled to left field but then an error on the left fielder would allow May to score from first. The next hitter
Skyler Forst doubled down the left field line to score Allen.
Quinton Bidon would strikeout for the second out of the inning, Brandt Wood would pinch hit for Hughes and get hit by a pitch to extend the game. Wohl popped out to the first baseman on the first pitch of the at bat to end the game.
Mayville State finished game one with five runs on six hits and zero errors. Wohl, Theisen, May, Allen, Forst, and Hughes each tallied a hit in the contest. Joshua Rodriquez tallied the loss for the Comets going four innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
Ramsay Taliaferro pitched the final two innings allowing six hits and three earned runs.
Game Two:
The Broncos stranded six runners in the first five innings and could not push a run across. Hastings would score the only three runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead heading into the final inning. The Comets finished the game with zero runs, two hits, and one error.
Connor DiNaro started on the mound for the Comets going 4.2 innings allowing four hits, zero runs, and struck out five. Kenneth Stewart picked up the loss going 1.1 innings allowing one hit, three earned runs, three walks, and one strikeout.
Marcus Wohl and
Liam Allen tallied the only two hits for the Comets in game two.
The Comets and Broncos are back in action tomorrow for another doubleheader from Duncan Field, first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
