MAYVILLE, ND –
Marcus Wohl knew what was in store as he headed to bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. Comets head coach
Scott Berry called on Wohl to replace
Dayne Fredland, and Wohl took advantage, hitting a two-run single to left field, which ended up being the difference, as Mayville State defeated the University of Jamestown, 4-2, in the opener for the Comets in the fall season at
Scott Berry Field in Mayville.
"I knew the situation that the pitcher was in, he had to compete with his fastball," Wohl said. "He struggled with his off-speed in the at-bats leading up to mine, so I was up there looking to put a good swing on a pitch over the plate early."
"It was a great grind-it-out win for the Comets," Berry said. "I'm very proud of our team's diligence and persistence, working through a very tough game."
The Jimmies got on the board first, in the top of the first inning, when Kendall Yackley scored on a hard-hit Dylan Dudley shot to right field.
The 1-0 University of Jamestown lead stuck until the bottom of the second inning, when Mayville State's Garpestad scored on a two-out sacrifice fly to center field by
Brantt Wood, tying the game at 1-1.
The 1-1 tie stayed until the top of the sixth, with two outs.
Jamestown's Tayler Cullen singled to left field. Then, moments later, pinch hitter Brian Rice doubled to deep right-center, scoring Cullen, and giving the Jimmies the lead 2-1. Mayville State escaped the sixth with no further damage.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth, with Mayville State down 2-1, the leadoff batter was
Theo May.
Jamestown had just brought in relief pitcher, Dylan Haney, replacing Andy Reed.
On the first pitch of the at-bat,
Theo May nailed a pitch right down the heart of the plate, taking it over the right-center wall, tying the game with three innings to go.
Wohl finished the ball game one-for-one with two RBI's for Mayville State. Garpestad and Hughes each went two-for-three, with Garpestad scoring two of Mayville State's four runs.
Adrian Zubia and
Michael Theisen also had multi-hit days for the Comets.
Joshua Rodriguez took the win on the mound, pitching eight innings of nine-hit baseball, giving up two runs, both earned; walking two and striking out eight.
Ryan Froemke came into the ninth to earn the save for Mayville State.
Austin Pesicka took the loss for Jamestown, giving up two runs on one hit, the hit by Wohl; walking three and striking out one.
Mayville State will host Valley City State University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at
Scott Berry Field. The Comets are 1-0 on the fall schedule, while Valley City State enters the contest with a 2-3 record.
