WATERTOWN, SD – The journey will continue for the 19th ranked Mayville State University Comets women's basketball team, as a trip to the NAIA National Tournament was achieved Sunday afternoon. The Comets survived a late scare, and advanced to the national tournament with a 74-70 win over the Viterbo V-Hawks in the North Star Athletic Association championship at the Watertown Civic Arena in Watertown, S.D., on Sunday afternoon.
With 10 seconds to go in the contest, Viterbo's Allie Wojtysiak took the lead on a pass from Ambree Schlosser, putting doubt in the Comets wish to advance to the national tournament.
But, back-to-back timeouts allowed Comets head coach Dennis Hutter to set up a play, as it went into their offensive end. Kylee Heurung picked up a pass, found a wide-open Claire Blascziek, who drained the go-ahead two-pointer with four seconds left, giving life back to the Comets. Heurung was fouled with two seconds left, and nailed both free-throws, which gave Mayville State the final four-point advantage in the closing seconds.
Mayville State started the game down 3-0 with a three-pointer by Wojtysiak just 58 seconds in, but Nicole Bunting responded quickly with a three of her own, starting a 5-0 run for the Comets, which ended with Madison Lindauer's two-point bucket with 6:52 to go in the opening quarter of play.
Both teams played back-and-forth, but Lindauer gave the V-Hawks a two-point lead with 5:51 to go in the quarter.
Mayville State then went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead with three minutes to go in the quarter.
Wojtysiak tied the game at 20-20 just 10 seconds into the second quarter—a quick start for the V-Hawks, which led to a 5-0 run and a 25-20 lead with 9:06 to go in the half.
Jordan Zrust and Taylor Reilly stopped the 5-0 run and pulled the game to within one with 7:53 left.
The V-Hawks eventually extended the lead to eight, but a three-point play by Andrea Skillingstad with 32 seconds left in the half pulled the Comets to within five points going into the third quarter.
A Blascziek three-pointer 57 seconds into the third quarter pulled the Comets to within two points with less than a minute gone in the third quarter.
Mayville State fought back, taking the lead back with 2:09 to go, when Heurung drained a bucket, but the Comets fell behind 11 seconds later, on a pair of V-Hawk free-throws.
Blascziek put an exclamation mark on the three-point category with 1:38 to go in the third, a shot that put the Comets up by two points. But, Viterbo's three-point shooting was equally as good, as they drained a three-pointer to go back up by one point with just over a minute to go.
A pair of Blascziek free-throws gave the Comets a one-point lead heading to the final quarter.
The fourth quarter started with a Viterbo two-pointer, but then the Comets took a four-point lead on a three-pointer by Zrust with 8:16 to go.
Viterbo fought back, and pulled even with 4:38 to go, only to lose their momentum when Taylor Skjordal sunk a shot with 4:29 to go, giving Mayville State the two-point lead, a lead the Comets would never relinquish.
Bunting increased the Comet lead to nine points with 2:02 to go, with a three-pointer from outside the arc, answered by Viterbo's Wojtysiak.
The V-Hawks closed the gap to one point with 58 seconds left when Lindauer hit a jumper for Viterbo, setting up the dramatic finish.
Mayville State was led by four players in double figures—and two with double-doubles. Zrust, a freshman, finished tied with a game-high 19 points, and added 11 rebounds, for a double-double. Heurung, who went a perfect five-for-five from the free-throw line, finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, also registering a double-double in the championship. Bunting finished the game with 16 points, including four three-pointers; and Blascziek finished with 15 points, including three three-pointers.
With the win Sunday afternoon, the Comets will receive the automatic bid for the NAIA National Tournament, which begins March 11 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The NAIA National Championship Bracket reveal will be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. At that time, the Comets will find out who and when they will take on in the opening round of the national tournament.
