Bunting scores career high 33 points in opening round loss to Coyotes

The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team dropped the opening round game of the National Tournament to the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan by a final score of 86-64. The Comets finished the season with a 25-6 record.
 
The Coyotes started the game on a 10-3 run to jump out to an early lead on the Comets. Kansas Wesleyan would take a 22-11 lead heading into the second quarter. In the first quarter, Mayville State shot 21.4 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 13-6. Early in the second quarter, the Comets went on a 6-0 run capped off by a layup by Taylor Reilly. The Coyotes would finish the half strong and take a 13-point lead heading into the intermission.
 
The Comets would shoot 30.0 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point line, and committed eight turnovers in the first half. Kansas Wesleyan with about 6:24 left in the third quarter went on a 14-2 run to stretch the lead to 23 with 1:43 left in the third quarter. The Comets would cut the lead to 19 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Comets would trim the lead to 16 but the Coyotes would answer with a mini run to extend the lead to 22 and pick up the victory. The Comets shot 37.5 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from behind the arc, and nine-of-ten from the free-throw line. Mayville State tallied 31 rebounds, 13 assists on 21 rebounds, one block, and three steals in the loss this morning.
 
Nicole Bunting finished her final game with a career high 33 points on 10 field goals made, 10-11 from the free-throw line, and two rebounds. Kylee Heurung was the other Comet in double figures with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Jordan Zrust was the leading scorer for the Comets off the bench with seven points and four rebounds. Cyan Hale recorded four points, four rebounds, and one assist in the loss.
 
Claire Blascziek finished with three points, seven assists, one rebound, and one steal. Alissa Foster made her only field goal attempt, scoring three points and tallying one rebound. Taylor Shamp scored two points, with four rebounds, one block, and one steal. Taylor Reilly tallied two points and three rebounds. Andrea Skillingstad recorded two rebounds and one steal off the bench.
 
The Comets will graduate nine seniors this season; Alissa Foster, Cyan Hale, Nicole Bunting, Claire Blascziek, Taylor Skjordal, Sara Herzog, Haley Anderson, Andrea Skillingstad, and Taylor Shamp. These seniors finished their career with an 81-34 record over the past four years with one NSAA Conference Tournament Championship, back-to-back regular season champions, and a NAIA Division II National Tournament Appearance.
