The 2019 Comets Softball team defeated the #23 team in the country with a 9-2 victory over the Warriors, this win was during the Arizona Spring trip that the Softball team went 6-2 in last year. Mayville State racked up ten hits in the game. Gutierrez and Kemball both collected two hits to lead Mayville State. Niedge led the way in the RBI category with three on the day for the Comets.
The Comets defeated the #23 team in the country, Midland Warriors, 9-2 on Thursday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at two with Mayville State batting in the bottom of the fifth when
Nicole Bunting tripled on a 1-1 count, scoring
Dayna Gutierrez and
Amanda Izzo to give MSU the lead and eventual win.
From there, the Comets managed five more runs in the inning, including an RBI double from
Alissa Foster and a triple from
Sierra Niedge that drove in another three runs.
That was more than enough run support for
Annika Seedborg, she was in the circle for Mayville State and didn't let Midland think about a comeback. She went seven innings, allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out eight.
Hailee Fliam toed the rubber for the Warriors. She surrendered eight runs on eight hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one. Michaela Jackson and Madison Plummer entered the game as relief, throwing one inning and one-third of an inning respectively.
The Comets tallied one home run on the day.
Shaye Kemball had a long ball in the second inning over the left field fence.
