Valley City, N.D. – The Mayville State University baseball team beat Valley City State Thursday night by a final score of 7-1. The Comets move to 2-0 on the season.
The Comets scored early again with two runs in the first inning, Theisen singled with one out in the inning. Then back-to-back doubles by May and Forst to score the first two runs of the game. In the second inning, Mayville State would score two more runs when Wohl doubled to left field that scored DeLuca and Villanueva.
The Vikings would answer with one run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-1. MSU would score the fifth and sixth run of the game in the top of the fifth on a Villanueva single that scored May and Forst to extend the lead to 6-1. The Comets would score one more run in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Vikings 7-1.
Matthew Johnston completed 6.0 innings allowing five hits, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts. Kenneth Stewart threw two innings in relief allowing one hit. Marcus Hughes threw the last inning not allowing a hit and striking out two batters. Payton DeLuca tallied three hits in four at-bats while also scoring one run.
Theo May recorded one hit in four at-bats scoring two runs and drove in one run. Skylar Forst and Hughes each recorded one hit in the victory. Anthony Villanueva drove in two runs on one hit and one run scored.
The Comets are home on Monday for the home opener as they face the Vikings. First pitch from Scott Berry field at 3:00 PM.
