Vikings use long ball to defeat the Comets

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University baseball team dropped the home opener by a final score of 8-4. MSU drops to 2-1 on the regular season.

VCSU started the scoring in the first inning on a two-run home run by Reed to give them a 2-0 lead. MSU threatened in the second inning by filling the bases with one out but grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. The Comets would load the bases up in the third inning as well but struck out with two outs to end another threat.

The Vikings would hit their second two-run home run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Mayville State would answer in the bottom of the fourth inning as they put three runners on via the walk and Theo May scored the first run for the Comets on a passed ball. In the fifth inning, Valley City State would score two runs to extend the lead to 6-1.

A solo home run in the sixth and eighth inning gave the Vikings a commanding 8-1 lead. MSU would scratch one run in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice 6-4-3 double play that scored Payton DeLuca. After a 1-2-3 inning by Marcus Hughes, the Comets would load the bases in the ninth and scored two runs on a fielder's choice that scored Theisen. On the same play, McCorrister scored on a Viking error to cut the lead to 4-8. With the tying run on deck, the Comets would ground out to the third baseman to end the game.

Leading the charge for the Comets was Skylar Forst, he finished the game 3-for-3. DeLuca also had multiple hits for MSU, while also scoring a run. Adam Senden took the loss on the mound going 3.0 innings allowing three hits, two earned runs and stuck out three batters. Anthony Villanueva and Marcus Hughes threw 1.0 shutout innings in the loss.

The Comets hit the road Thursday as they travel back to Jamestown to face the Jimmies. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM from Jack Brown Stadium. Go to msucomets.com for links for live stats and video.
