Comets finish game on 8-4 run to defeat the Bruins

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Men's Basketball team defeated the Bellevue Bruins by a final score of 75-71 Saturday night. The Comets move to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The Comets started the game with an 8-2 run that lasted over the first five minutes of the game. MSU was up 12-7 with 12:13 left in the first half before a 7-0 Comet run to extend the lead to 12, Winder had five points during that stretch. Mayville State's biggest lead was 15 in the first half, as they took a 13-point lead heading into the intermission.

Bellevue cut the Comet lead to nine with 17:28 left in the game before a 6-0 run by the Comets stretched the lead back to 15 with 15:25 left. The Bruins would then go on a 12-2 run to cut the Comet lead to five. Bellevue University would take a two-point advantage with 3:11 left in the game. Iker Cruz would hit two free-throws to tie the game at 67. MSU would go on a 5-0 run capped off by a Franklin layup with 53 seconds left in the game. The Comets would win the game by four 75-71 to move to 4-0 in conference play.

Mayville State University Comets finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from behind the arc, 11 assists on 28 made field goals and 34 rebounds. They also finished with 16 points off turnovers, 17 bench points, and two second-chance points. Latrelle Franklin finished with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Keiron Goodwin finished with 13 points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal. John Ketchel was the last Comet in double figures with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Iker Cruz and Winder Joseph each tallied seven points in the victory.

MSU is back in action tomorrow as Dakota State comes to the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 against the Trojans.
